Have you ever experienced a psychic episode, a remarkable coincidence, or something that you couldn’t rationally explain? Most people have at some point in their lives. What are we to make of these events that go against the normal materialistic paradigm in which we live? The internet and movies now abound with things like UFOs, near-death experiences, ghost encounters, and spontaneous healings. People are hungry to hear of miraculous events. But what do such things mean, and what do they indicate about how the universe operates?
I was a psychic studies major at U.C. Santa Barbara in the 1980’s. I’ve tested world-class psychics in a lab, experienced objects teleporting, and even undergone instant healings. In my book, “Opening to the Miraculous,” I share 30 astonishing stories from my life, as well as the lives of people ranging from Jimmy Carter to Paul McCartney. Amidst all this weird and wonderful stuff, I’ve tried to understand what miraculous events can teach me and others. In the end, I’ve come to see that they point to three big lessons that everyone could benefit from.

We Are More Capable Than We Imagine
With the right training, human beings can do some amazing things. They can walk barefoot on burning hot coals without getting burned, send healing energy to others, or peek into rooms across the world. Human beings can even influence electronics with their minds, or read another person’s thoughts. I’ve seen certain psychics, gurus, and even ordinary people do all of these things. I know a 75-year-old woman who lifted a car when her granddaughter got trapped under a vehicle. Under the right circumstances, abilities that can seem like superpowers can sometimes manifest. This means that such abilities potentially exist within all of us.
Unfortunately, just because we’re capable of amazing things doesn’t mean that we ever tap into such abilities. For marvelous things to manifest, human beings either need extensive training or highly intense situations. The grandma who lifts a car does not normally go around lifting vehicles. However, when the need is great enough, a person can sometimes tap into energies and abilities that prove we are more capable than we imagine.

Reality is More Remarkable Than We Think
We live in a materialistic culture in which science tries to explain everything through the physics it currently understands. Yet, as Shakespeare once said, “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” Modern physics only understands 5% of what makes up the universe. The other 95% supposedly consists of dark energy and dark matter–neither of which we understand at all. Despite the prevailing materialistic paradigm, recent studies show that things such as precognition, telepathy, and ghosts do indeed exist. While investigating psychics at U.C. Santa Barbara, I measured people who could consistently influence computers with their minds, hear from dead spirits, and see things hidden in far away rooms.
How do we explain such amazing and seemingly irrational things? In recent years, several theories have been put forth that go beyond materialistic explanations. Many scientists and physicists now speculate that consciousness is fundamental and that frameworks such as Quantum Information Theory (QIT) explain reality better than our old paradigm. The central premise of QIT is that information—not matter—is the most fundamental aspect of reality. These scientists argue that the universe is better understood as processing information rather than being composed simply of particles. This could help explain things such as precognition, telepathy, and the distant transmission of energy. As new theories of reality gain traction, whole new possibilities will arise as to what really operates the universe.

We Are Spiritual Beings
A final lesson to be learned from anomalous phenomena is that we are more than material beings. Indeed, recent studies indicate that we are spiritual beings temporarily living a material existence. Why do I say that? Well, across all cultures, people who temporarily die, then return to life, report extremely similar experiences. Studies show that people undergoing near-death experiences (NDE’s) often report having a life review, seeing dead loved ones, and then encountering a being of light. Furthermore, some of these folks come back from their ordeal knowing about people and events they shouldn’t possibly know. Such reports indicate that people having an NDE are undergoing more than the events of a dying brain.
In the 1990’s, I was on The Oprah Show with several people who had been “dead” for more than twenty minutes. They all reported that while “dead,” they felt like they were being asked to evaluate their life in terms of what they had learned and how loving they had been. Reports like these lend credence to the idea that human life has an inherent purpose, and that we are here to learn about love and other life lessons. If that’s the case, then it would be more accurate to say we are spiritual beings temporarily inhabiting a physical body. The more than 20 gurus I’ve interviewed, ranging from Ram Dass to the Dalai Lama, also tended to agree that learning certain lessons is our task here on Earth.
In the popular 1990’s series, The X-Files, every episode began with the title card saying, “The Truth is Out There.” The truth is indeed out there, but in some cases it is rather hidden and hard to ascertain. For too long, our materialistic culture has put forth that life has no hidden purpose and that we are just a collection of molecules. This view has stripped us of meaning and ignored anomalous data that suggests there is more going on than we’ve been led to believe. Fortunately, with cutting-edge science, I believe we’ll soon understand some things much better than we have in the past. In the meantime, miracles and mysterious events already point to lessons that are key to our future development. As we fully comprehend these lessons, new purposes and possibilities will be uncovered. We are on the threshold of a new understanding of what it means to be human.
